Funding Boost for the Mathematical Sciences and Changes to Tier 1 Visas
The government has announced additional funding for the Mathematical Sciences of up to £300 million, which will more than double the current funding for the Mathematical Sciences delivered by EPSRC.
It includes:
Sir Simon Donaldson Awarded Wolf Prize
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to congratulate Professor Sir Simon Donaldson (Imperial College London) who has been awarded the Wolf Prize for Mathematics, jointly with Professor Yakos Eliashberg (Stanford University). Sir Simon receives the award for his contributions to differential geometry and topology.
The Wolf Foundation inaugurated the Wolf Prize in 1978, awarding the Prize to academics who have made ‘significant breakthroughs and extraordinary achievements in agriculture, mathematics, medicine, physics, chemistry and the arts’.

It is with regret that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learned of the death of Professor Walter Hayman FRS on 1 January 2020.
Professor Hayman was a longstanding member of the LMS, having been elected to membership on 20 March 1947. He was awarded the LMS De Morgan Medal in 1995 and was also awarded the LMS Berwick Prize in 1955 and the Senior Berwick Prize in 1964. He was an LMS Vice President from 1982-1984. LMS Member Honoured in New Year’s List
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like extend its warmest congratulations to its former Treasurer, Professor Nicholas Woodhouse who was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours list for services to mathematics.
International Day of Mathematics: March 14
The International Mathematical Union (IMU) has announced that the 40th General Conference of UNESCO has proclaimed that March 14 (pi day 3.14) will from now on be the International Day of Mathematics (IDM).
As March 14, 2020 is a Saturday, the international official launch will take place on Friday March 13, 2020. There will be two parallel international events: in Paris at the UNESCO Headquarters, and at the Einstein Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.
Gresham Professor of Geometry
Applications are currently being invited for the position of Gresham Professor of Geometry - ie the Mathematical Sciences. Gresham Professors must be able to 'communicate with a public audience who will not normally have specialist expertise in the subject, but who will be informed people with a thirst for increased knowledge'. The closing date for applications is 13 January 2020. More information about the position is available here.
MARM Partnership Grants: call for prospective mentors
Deadline: 20th December 2019
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the International Mathematical Union (IMU) in association with the African Mathematics Millennium Science Initiative (AMMSI) are seeking applications for grants to support mathematics and its teaching in universities in Africa. Four mentoring partnerships are to be awarded. These will be for a duration of one year, with the possibility of extension for a further year.
LMS Honorary Member awarded prestigious prize
Professor Cheryl Praeger (University of Western Australia) has been awarded the 2019 Prime Minister's Prize for Science. Professor Praeger received the Prize for contributions to group theory, permutation groups, combinatorics and the mathematics of symmetry. She received the Prize at a ceremony on October 16 at Parliament House in Canberra.
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to extend its congratulations to Professor Praeger who became an Honorary Member of the Society in 2014.
