The London Mathematical Society is pleased to announce its Call for Proposals for the LMS-Bath Mathematical Symposia to be held at the University of Bath in 2022. Subject to confirmed funding, it is hoped that two LMS-Bath Mathematical Symposia can be supported in 2022.
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) is delighted to learn that Professor Ulrike Tillmann FRS, LMS President-Designate, has been appointed as the next Director of the Isaac Newton Institute (INI). Professor Tillmann will become the seventh Director since the INI opened in 1992, following in the footsteps of Sir Michael Atiyah, Professor Keith Moffatt, Sir John Kingman, Sir David Wallace, Professor John Toland and current Director Professor David Abrahams. Her five-year appointment begins on 1 October 2021.

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to congratulate Honorary Member Professor Cheryl Praeger (University of Western Australia) on being made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List for ‘eminent service to mathematics and to tertiary education, as a leading academic and researcher, to international organisations, and as a champion of women in STEM careers’.
A reminder that the deadline to submit nominations for the LMS/BSHM Hirst Prize, awarded for contributions towards the study of the history of mathematics, is 31st January 2021. Nominations should be sent to the Secretary to the Hirst Prize Committee, Katherine Wright (prizes@lms.ac.uk). See details and download a nomination form here.
Following a major increase in funding, ICMS seeks a full-time Director. This new role will be an exciting opportunity to drive the expansion of the institute, as well as shape and develop its future direction. The successful applicant will concurrently hold the position of Director of the ICMS and a permanent Maxwell Institute professorship in mathematical sciences. A job description is available here.

The David Crighton Medal was established by the Councils of the LMS and IMA in 2002 in order to pay tribute to the memory of Professor David George Crighton FRS. The silver gilt medal will be awarded to an eminent mathematician for services both to mathematics and to the mathematical community, who is normally resident in the mathematical community represented by the two organisations on the 1st January of the year of the award.
It is with great sadness that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learned of the death of Dr Peter Neumann. Dr Neumann was a very influential and popular figure in UK mathematics and in the LMS.
The 2020 LMS Naylor Lecture, The Mathematics of Today’s Floating-Point Arithmetic, was presented by Professor Nick Higham, University of Manchester at the Society’s virtual Annual General Meeting on 20 November.
