Appointment of new CMS Chair
The Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS) is delighted to announce that Professor Alison Etheridge OBE, FRS, FIMA will be its new Chair. Professor Etheridge is Professor of Probability and member of the Mathematical Institute and Head of the Department of Statistics, University of Oxford. She will become Chair of the CMS in September 2021, succeeding Professor Sir Ian Diamond DL, FBA, FRSE, FacSS, National Statistician.
Mathematics at the University of Leicester
In February the London Mathematical Society issued a statement in response to a proposal by the University of Leicester to reduce significantly the size of its Pure Mathematics Group and to stop supporting research in this area. We understand that the university has now begun to implement its plans, which include compulsory redundancies, voluntary severance packages, and moving some staff to predominantly (80%) teaching contracts.
The Azat Miftakhov Day: 16 June 2021
This event is being organised online by the Azat Miftakhov committee in solidarity with Azat Miftakhov, a graduate student from Moscow State University who has been detained by Russian state authorities for almost two and a half years.

News for US Taxpayers
The LMS is delighted to announce that it has recently become possible for US taxpayers to make tax-deductible donations to the LMS. Previously such an option has not been available, and this may have been an issue for people wishing to make donations in the past. There are about 175 LMS members living in the US and the arrangements also apply to US taxpayers living elsewhere.
Double gold for UK at European maths championship
For the first time the team representing the UK at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) has brought home two gold medals. The team also won further silver and bronze medals, with each team member receiving a medal.
LMS Members Elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh
The London Mathematical Society (LMS) would like to congratulate three of its members – Professor Tara Brendle (University of Glasgow), Professor Paul Glendinning (University of Manchester) and Professor Bernd Schroers (Heriot-Watt University) on being elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE).
