The London Mathematical Society (LMS) congratulates Professor Dame Frances Kirwan on her recent award of the 2021 Royal Society Sylvester Medal.

Over the last 18 months university departments of mathematical sciences have needed to substantially adapt their learning, teaching, assessment and support practices to respond to the challenges of delivering programmes of study during the Covid-19 pandemic. As learned societies with responsibility for championing the mathematical sciences and supporting those colleagues working within them, we have noted that the transition to online assessment has posed particular challenges.

The London Mathematical Society (LMS) congratulates Professor June Barrow-Green on her award of the 2021 Royal Society Wilkins-Bernal-Medawar Medal and Lecture.

The number of A-level Mathematics entries across the UK is up 3.6% on last year, with 97,690 student entries.

Two UK students - Samuel Liew and Yuka Machino, Year 13 students at The West Bridgford School and Millfield School respectively -  have won Gold Medals at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Yuka Machino, 17 came top amongst all female participants for the second year in a row and was the only female participant in the competition to receive a gold medal. 

The LMS and Institute of Mathematics and its Applications are delighted to announce that the 2021 David Crighton Medal is awarded to Professor Caroline Series, of the University of Warwick. This is in recognition of her fundamental and beautiful results connecting geometry and dynamical systems, and her outstanding service to the mathematical community, including her pioneering work to support the careers of women in mathematics.
