The Society is delighted that in today’s Spring Statement, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced that the definition of research and development (R&D) for tax reliefs will be expanded by clarifying that pure mathematics is a qualifying cost. This will support the growing volume of R&D underpinned by mathematical advances.

On this International Women’s Day, the Society recognises and champions the ongoing importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in the mathematical sciences research community.
The third International Day of Mathematics (IDM) will take place on pi day, March 14. The theme this year is ‘Mathematics Unites’, with a photo challenge for schools and universities; see https://www.idm314.org for further details.

The London Mathematical Society notes with great concern the military situation in Ukraine and the likely impact on the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), which is planned to take place in July in St Petersburg, Russia.
One of the core aims of the Society is to advance the development of mathematical knowledge, both nationally and internationally. Participation in events such as the ICM is an important means of achieving that aim. However, developments in Ukraine greatly diminish the opportunity for effective international collaboration in St Petersburg.
The Councils of the IMA and the LMS are inviting nominations for the 2022 award of the Christopher Zeeman Medal, which is the UK award dedicated to recognising excellence in the communication of mathematics.
