Brady Haran was presented with the Christopher Zeeman Medal at a special event on Wednesday 7 May 2025 at the Royal Society, London. In the subsequent Zeeman Lecture, Brady Haran used this special occasion to show some of the most amazing artefacts and documents you will ever see in real life, and this talk is available to watch on the LMS YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/MB9AlfoMAcU
The Maths Degrees for the Future programme, launched by the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences (CaMS), today named five universities who will share a £2.5 million pot to create ‘next-gen’ degree designs that connect foundational mathematics to key applications in an increasingly AI and data driven world.
A recent article by Liberal Democrat MP Ian Sollom on politics.co.uk, organised by the Campaign for Mathematical Sciences, argues for the urgent need of a national strategy for mathematics in the UK.
The London Mathematical Society is saddened to announce the death of Professor E. Brian Davies FRS, who died on 2 June 2025, at the age of 80.
Professor Davies was a highly esteemed member of the mathematical community and a member of the Society for nearly 52 years, having been elected to LMS membership on 21 June 1973. A leading figure in analysis, particularly in spectral theory, operator theory, and mathematical physics, his contributions were recognised through several awards, including the LMS Senior Berwick Prize in 1988 and the LMS Polya Prize in 2011.
Several mathematicians and statisticians have been recognised in the 2025 King's Birthday Honours list for their contributions to science, education, and public health. Notably, LMS member Professor Ursula Martin, Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford, was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to science and education.
The London Mathematical Society expresses its deep concern over the current situation of Professor Mikhail V. Volkov, formerly of the Ural Federal University in Ekaterinburg. In the last months Prof. Volkov has been dismissed from his position, put under a criminal investigation, and subject to a travel ban. Meanwhile, he is facing serious health issues that have required hospitalisation.
