Objectives: To provide partial support for mathematical activities based in Africa. Activities can include:
- Attendance to mathematical conferences or workshops.
- The organisation of mathematical conferences or workshops.
- Mathematical research collaborations.
If you are unsure whether your activity can be supported by the LMS Mathematics in Africa Scheme, please contact the LMS on the details at the bottom of the page and your proposal will be discussed with the Research Grants Committee Chair.
Please note that only one grant, per Scheme, per person, per LMS financial year (1 August - 31 July) is allowed.
Eligibility:
- Grant applicants can be mathematicians based anywhere in the world but grants will only be awarded for activities taking place within Africa.
- Please note that PhD students are not eligible to apply for a Mathematics in Africa grant.
Criteria:
- The Society will support only mathematical activities which take place in Africa.
- Conference and Workshop organisers should note the following advice on diversity.
Value of award: The maximum award is £2,000 (this amount is the upper limit, not the standard award) and covers:
- Mathematical activities based in Africa.
- Travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses.
- In addition, the Society allows the use of the grant award to cover Caring Costs for those attendees who have dependents.
- Visa costs are regarded as part of normal travel expenses.
- The grant will be split into two payments. Half of the value of the grant can be claimed in advance of the activity. The balance of the grant, up to the actual cost of the expenses incurred, will be paid upon receipt of a satisfactory financial and academic report.
- Grants will be paid to a university or institution only; payments will not be made to individual bank accounts.
The life of an LMS Grant is two financial years (1 August - 31 July). All awarded grants need to be claimed no later than the 31 July in the second year of the grant, i.e., if a grant is awarded in the 2023/24 financial year, the grant will need to be claimed by the 31 July 2026. Any grants that have not been claimed within the two-year period will be withdrawn.

- Grants will not be made retrospectively.
