Two UK students - Samuel Liew and Yuka Machino, Year 13 students at The West Bridgford School and Millfield School respectively - have won Gold Medals at this year's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Yuka Machino, 17 came top amongst all female participants for the second year in a row and was the only female participant in the competition to receive a gold medal.
The UK team, which is entered into the competition by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) and supported by XTX Markets, was also awarded three silver medals and one Honourable Mention. Over 100 countries took part in the prestigious competition and the outstanding all-round performance meant the UK finished in 9th place. This is the fourth time in six years that the UK has placed in the top 10 at the 'world championship of mathematics'.
