About

Nonlinearity covers the interdisciplinary nature of nonlinear science, featuring topics which range from physics, mathematics and engineering through to biological sciences.

Aimed primarily at mathematicians and physicists interested in research on nonlinear phenomena, the journal’s coverage ranges from proofs of important theorems to papers presenting ideas, conjectures and numerical or physical experiments of significant physical and mathematical interest.

The journal publishes papers on nonlinear mathematics, mathematical physics, experimental physics, theoretical physics and other areas in the sciences where nonlinear phenomena are of fundamental importance. A more detailed indication is given by the subject interests of the Editorial Board members, which are listed in every issue of the journal.

Due to the broad scope of Nonlinearity, and in order to make all papers published in the journal accessible to its wide readership, authors are required to provide sufficient introductory material in their paper. This material should contain enough detail and background information to place their research into context and to make it understandable to scientists working on nonlinear phenomena.

Not-for-profit publishing

Nonlinearity is jointly owned by the London Mathematical Society and the Institute of Physics. It is published by IOP Publishing.

100% of the funds generated by Nonlinearity are reinvested in mathematics and physics by the owning societies.

Publishing your research in Nonlinearity directly supports the charitable work of the London Mathematical Society and the Institute of Physics.

Submitting to Nonlinearity

Nonlinearity welcomes submissions of the following article types:

  • Research Papers: reports of original research work. The main criterion for acceptance will be the existence of a significant contribution to the general mathematical or physical understanding of nonlinear systems.
  • Invited Articles: commissioned by the Editorial Board.

Before submitting an article to Nonlinearity, we recommend that authors read the author guidelines for Nonlinearity.

Nonlinearity maintains the highest standards of publication and research ethics and is a member of the Committee for Publication Ethics (COPE). Authors are expected to comply with IOP Publishing’s Ethical policy.

Nonlinearity has adopted IOP Publishing’s standard data policy. Please check that your article complies with the policy before submission.

All articles published in this journal are peer reviewed. Editors may reject papers without external review. Read our full peer review policy.

Open Access

Nonlinearity is a hybrid open access journal.

Authors have the option to pay an article publication charge (APC) to publish their article on a gold open access basis under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence. Articles published on a gold open access basis are freely available to everyone to read and reuse immediately upon publication, provided the terms of the licence are followed and clear attribution to the author is given.

Alternatively authors who do not select the gold open access option can choose a green open access route to publication.

For more information on IOP Publishing’s open access policies please see the Open access page.
