IMA-LMS David Crighton Award Lecture and Medal Presentation 2024

Date:

The IMA-LMS David Crighton Award Lecture 'Modelling Genes' will be given by Professor Alison Etheridge FRS OBE (Wolfson Centre for Mathematical Biology), winner of the 2023 IMA – LMS David Crighton Award.

Abstract

The patterns of genetic variation that we see in the world around us have been produced by myriad forces including natural selection, mutation, random mating, and other genetic, ecological and evolutionary mechanisms.  How do they interact with one another, and what was their relative importance in shaping the patterns that we see today? This question lies at the heart of theoretical population genetics.  In this talk we’ll discuss some of the ways in which apparently simplistic mathematical models can capture some of the essence of evolution and, moreover, display a rich and beautiful mathematical structure.
