Objectives: The grant is to support a visit for collaborative research, either by the grant holder to a developing country (as defined by the IMU Commission for Developing Countries (see https://www.mathunion.org/cdc/about-cdc/definition-developing-countries) where mathematics could be considered to be in a disadvantaged position, or by a named mathematician from an aforementioned country in which mathematics could be considered to be in a disadvantaged position, to the home base of the grant holder.
Applicants unsure if the proposed country is eligible under a Scheme 5 grant should contact the Grants Team. Applicants will be expected to explain in their application why the selected country fits the circumstances considered eligible for Scheme 5 funding. For other visits, a Scheme 2 or Scheme 4 grant may be more appropriate.
Please note that only one grant, per Scheme, per person, per LMS financial year (1 August - 31 July) is allowed.
Eligibility:
- Grant applicants should be a mathematician based in the UK, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands when the visit is planned. Applicants based outside of the UK at the time of application should provide proof that they will have relocated to the UK by the time of their visit. Please note that should a grant holder leave the UK before the planned visit then the grant will be withdrawn.
- Please note that PhD students are not eligible to apply for a Collaborating with Developing Countries grant but can apply to the LMS ECR Travel Grant Scheme to support collaborative research visits.
- Non LMS members will need to ask an LMS member to counter-sign their application.
Criteria:
- Applicants are responsible for making all the arrangements for the visit.
- The grant is intended to support collaborative research or academic activities that will benefit the country concerned.
- Visits to/from the UK are expected to be at least 14 days.
- If the visit includes attending a conference, it must include other academic activities which would justify the grant, and it should be for a period of 14 days in addition to any time spent at the conference.
- If the visit includes attending a conference, the grant cannot be used to cover any expenses incurred during the period of the conference.
Value of award:
For visits to the UK, the maximum award is £3,000 towards actual expenses for:
- Travel (international and within the UK, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands)
- Accommodation and subsistence (maximum of £2,000, with a limit of £120 per day).
For visits from the UK, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, the maximum award is £2,000 towards actual expenses for travel, accommodation and subsistence.
In addition, the Society allows an additional amount (of up to £200) to cover Caring Costs for those who have dependents.
The life of an LMS Grant is two financial years (1 August - 31 July). All awarded grants need to be claimed no later than the 31 July in the second year of the grant, i.e., if a grant is awarded in the 2023/24 financial year, the grant will need to be claimed by the 31 July 2026. Any grants that have not been claimed within the two-year period will be withdrawn.

LMS Caring Costs Policy
The LMS wishes to enable carers and parents to take part in the activities that it supports. Applicants for grants across Schemes 1-9, for Early Career Research activities or who will run Society Meetings can request funding to help mathematicians with caring or parenting responsibilities to participate in their activities. In addition, individuals requiring support for caring to attend conferences, workshops, research schools and meetings or to make research visits - not necessarily organised by LMS - can apply for a Caring Supplementary Grant to contribute to such costs.
The Policy is available here.
Testimonials
“In 2021 I was awarded the LMS grant Scheme 5 “Collaborations with Developing Countries” to support a visit of Ukrainian mathematician to the UK. However, the date of the visit was changed several times because of the COVID restrictions and the war situation in Ukraine. The LMS always was very supportive and accommodating. I really appreciate kindness and willingness to help from of the LMS staff and, in particular, from the grant administrator Lucy Covington. All these efforts resulted in the successful and fruitful visit of the Ukrainian scientist during summer 2022. The visit was very useful for both parties and included many scientific activities and discussions with members of the Department of Mathematics”. – Prof. Roman Borisyuk, Exeter
