LMS Education Day 2018: Curriculum for the 21st Century
The annual LMS Education Day is a timely focus on Curriculum for the 21st Century. It will take place on Tuesday May 1 2018 at De Morgan House, London, 11am - 3:30pm.
Student education is being shaken up with the introduction of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and the replacement of HEFCE by the foundation of the Office for Students. With the government's stated aim to build a culture where teaching has equal status with research many universities are being led to consider their curricula. Across the sector, colleagues within mathematics departments are being asked to scrutinise taught programmes and in many cases to undertake a process of transformation in order to deliver courses that are fit for purpose in the 21st Century. A number of themes are emerging:
- de-modularisation,
- implementation of programme level outcomes,
- assessment for learning,
- developing graduate skills within discipline delivery,
- and structure of course delivery (typically to combine traditional lecturing with alternative delivery mechanisms: flipped classroom, blended learning, peer assisted learning etc).
The Education Day will provide opportunities for colleagues from across the sector to come together and discuss the opportunities and the challenges that transformation offers to mathematics departments.
In the morning, we will hear from a number of colleagues with experience of working on curriculum transformation and/or curriculum innovation. This will be followed in the afternoon by focussed small group discussions which we anticipate having themes of: curriculum delivery mechanisms for C21; assessment for learning; and mechanisms for effective curriculum transformation.

- Peter Rowlett (Reader in HE Mathematics Teaching & Learning, Sheffield Hallam University)
- Jane White (Director of Learning & Teaching, Mathematical Sciences, University of Bath).
We hope to end the day with an informal debate to draw out the critical elements for successful transformation of taught programmes in mathematics in HE.
Attendance is free and by registration only. Please register if you would like to attend. We hope that there will be a good representation from across the sector. Refreshments, including a light lunch, will be included.
